So I did not finish my game, it's more kind of a tech demo. It was a extremely busy fortnight for me, and I spent the last week doing something essential but time consuming... building a runtime setup for distribution. I've been working on getting my slightly strange platform and requirements building on Mac OSX and ran into some problems with packages and leopard and stuff. I managed to get it running, but I'm still trying to coax py2app to build me a distributable. I'll upload a build file once it's done, but it won't be much.
Next gamejam, once I have this build out of the road, my journey should be much smoother. Each gamejam will be an attempt to incrementally improve the development chain.
Now on to playing other peoples gamejam entries!

RE: explosions...
You could try simply scaling up a sprite from 0 scale, while fading it to alpha. Works great, esp with circular shock wave style explosions, with alpha fading at the edges.
